This Year Add A Little Love

We teach our children many things. We teach them how to color with crayons, write their names, and tie their shoes. We teach them how to play games, ride bikes, and
be polite. But there is something important we may not spend much time even thinking about. We need to teach our children to love.
Love seems to be the missing ingredient in our world right now. People fight and argue about who is right and who is wrong. There has been violence and ugliness and, because of lack of love, awful things have happened. We cannot change the past, but we can certainly create a future that is healthy and better for all of us. It starts with love. As parents, we have the opportunity to model the behavior we want our children to imitate.

Show them how to love themselves by demonstrating love. Stop criticizing yourself in your head or out loud. Practice self-care and have compassion for your own mistakes. They need to see how to do this in their own lives.

In the outside world, demonstrate kindness to others, even when you are frustrated and angry. Demonstrate behavior that is healthy and loving. Show them how you listen to others and work together to change the situations that hurt us all. Together, with love, we could be so much more effective and powerful. Our children are watching. What are they seeing, hearing and internalizing? Show them what love can look like. You could even do this as a family. Make some changes together to show them that love can start in the home.

  1. DO NOT CRITICIZE YOURSELF OR EACH OTHER.
  2. STOP NAMECALLING OR FIGHTING. WORK OUT PROBLEMS USING CONVERSATION, BRAINSTORMING, AND CALM VOICES.
  3. DO NICE THINGS FOR EACH OTHER.
  4. SAY THANK YOU OFTEN.
  5. MAKE SURE YOU SAY I LOVE YOU EVERY DAY.

Love is not just a word. It is a whole way of living. Let’s all try this year.
